Quick Update

Hello Beautiful Alums!

First of all, let me apologize for the lack of updates. Finals and preparation for my trip to Spain took over my life during the past two months!

When I get back to the States (around June 25th), I plan on going through a large box of composites that was given to me. I'll be scanning the composites and posting them on the Facebook group. If you could go through and tag yourself and others in the composites, that would be a huge help! If you would like to "claim" a composite (I have multiple copies of many of them), I can mail you a copy if you have provided us a mailing address.

Also on my agenda once I'm stateside is to go through the contact info we have on file. I want to make sure the contact info is up to date. This means you should expect some friendly emails from me. Please reply to these emails so I know that the email address is still in use! If I don't hear back from you and have a telephone number listed, I will make calls as well. I've begun this process by sending a message out to everyone in the Facebook group, so please reply at your earliest convenience with:

Your Name (Please include maiden name as well).
Pledge Class (Semester and year).
Graduation Year
Mailing Address
Telephone Number (Home or mobile).
Email Address
We're looking forward as a chapter to continue our growth in sisterhood and philanthropy and hope to have your continued support!

LIOB,

Jessica

PS: Here are some pictures from my trip to Spain so far. :)

Introduction

Hello Phi Mu Lambda Beta Alums!

First of all, I'd like to introduce myself as the new 2010-2011 Alumnae Chair. My name is Jessica Barr, and I'm a Junior Elementary Education major with a double minor in Spanish and History. I'm from Charlotte, NC (where I know many of you reside now!), and I'm very, very excited to be able to get to know all of you!

Those of you who attended the Alum Day in March may have met me already (I gave a quick speech about our chapter's current philanthropy efforts). I'd like to give a big "thank you!" to all of you who were able to attend the event. I know all of the sisters had an awesome time mingling with you all during our practice recruitment party, and I especially enjoyed our Phi Mu trivia competition and game of charades!

I have a couple of goals during my term as Alum Chair that I'd like to share with you all so we're on the same page.

  • Communication. This has been a real stumbling block for our chapter's alum relations in the past, and I'm really aiming to improve this facet of our relationship. As of now there are four ways our chapter has to contact you, if you have provided the necessary information: phone, email, Facebook, and this blog. During my term, I'm will be contacting you multiple times to make sure contact information is up to date and to keep you in the know of what is going on up here on the mountain. I've just created a Twitter account as another means of communication, @phimulbalum. If you have a Twitter, please follow @phimulbalum and encourage any of your fellow alum followers to do so as well!

I know that many of you may not be "tech savvy". You might not check Facebook, blog, or have a twitter. That's where the Roarie Report newsletter will come in handy. In the upcoming semester, I will be emailing out a newsletter containing highlights of recent events at Appstate and important developments within our chapter. If you would prefer to receive a physical copy of the newsletter via "snail mail", please let me know
  • Sisterhood and Support! Our sisterhood doesn't end on graduation day. I want to know what's going on in your life, the good and the bad, and I know the rest of the chapter does as well. If you have any special announcements (engagement, wedding, birth, new job, promotion, etc), please let me know so I can share these with the chapter as well! I have a few special ideas to improve our sisterhood and will let you know once they are approved! :)

Recent and Upcoming Events

Greek Week 2011: If you haven't already heard from the explosion of our chapter's Facebook statuses yesterday: Phi Mu Lambda Beta Chapter received first place overall in Greek Week this year!

Phi Mu's Pie a Mountaineer: As some of you may already know, our chapter has renewed our commitment to philanthropy this year by setting a goal of raising $5,000 for Children's Miracle Network. Our latest endeavor to reach our goal is the Pie a Mountaineer event. On Reading Day (April 28th), we will be offering a little stress relief for Apps before final exams. For $2/pie, students (faculty, and whoever!) will be able to pie participating deans, professors, and other students in the face. We're hoping this will be a great success, so we can turn it into an annual event. So, if there's a professor you've still got a vendetta against, why not come up the mountain to get a little revenge and help us reach our goal! ;)

Thanks for reading and be on the look out for another post soon!

As always, if you have any special stories about your time in our chapter, words of support/encouragement, or fun photos you'd like to share with the chapter, please email them to me so I can share them with our sisters. :)

LIOB,

Jessica

Alum Day is almost here! Get excited!

Hello Ladies!

I hope all of you are doing well! If you are planning on coming to Alum Day on March 26th, please send me an email or comment on this post to let me know you are coming. I need to know how many people to plan for. :)

The schedule is 1:30-6:00pm, with everyone leaving for dinner afterwards. We will meet in the Appalachian Panhellenic Hall, or APH, for the first half of the day, and then drive to a nearby park, weather permitting. We will be doing sisterhood and recruitment activities, as well as taking pictures. The family that has the most generations of members present at Alum Day will be given a gift card to a restaurant around Boone.

If you have any questions feel free to email me! Also, if you know of any fellow alum that don't know about Alum Day, tell them about it and invite them!

And again, please email me or comment on this post to RSVP for Alum Day.

Hope to see you on March 26th!
LIOB,
Blair the Alum Chair

Schedule change on Alum Day! And an Ebook Show!

Monday night at chapter the Delta Zeta sisters came to promote their annual Turtle Trot 5K. It is scheduled for March 26th. I have decided that because so many of our sisters want to run in the Turtle Trot, that I would move the schedule for Alum Day back a few hours so that they can participate. If any alum are interested in running this 5K, email me! Registration is 12$ before, and 15$ the day of. The new Alum Day schedule will now be:

1:30pm-2:00pm    Arrive at the APH, first introductions
2:00pm-4:00pm    Recruitment Activities
4:00pm-4:30pm    Family Pictures
4:30pm-6:00pm    Sisterhood Activites
6:00pm                   Dinner around Boone

Suzan Wood, our chapter advisor (who some of you might know!), was approached by a friend, Kathy Jordan, who holds Usborne Book Shows online and in people's homes. Like a Mary Kay party, but with children’s books instead! Here is more information from Kathy Jordan and Suzan Wood:

You are invited to an Usborne Books eShow to explore the world of Usborne Books.  A child's interest in reading and learning is stimulated by the lavish illustrations and informative content.  There are over 1300 bright, colorful and fun titles covering activities, puzzles and a wide range of subjects for children of all ages.

Please forward this eShow to friends and family. Half of the profits  from the show will go to CMN. Lambda Beta at Appalachian State University will make a donation to CMN at the end of this semester.  They have raised $3,100 already from other fundraisers and are trying to reach $5,000 this semester.
Thanks for your support.

Usborne Books - the books kids love to read!

Hosted by: CMN Fundraiser
Place: www.myubam.com/HOS193269
When: Today thru 3/31/2011 11:59:00 PM
Chat Scheduled: -

Everyone is welcome, so invite a friend! It's a rewarding experience when a child opens a book and discovers the magic of reading.

I think this a great way to support Lambda Beta and CMN. Especially if you are unable to come to Boone for Alum Day. So please help us out! We are really trying to make our $5,000 goal for CMN! Once we reach $5,000 we as a chapter will be recognized by CMN for our contributions. If you are planning on attending Alum Day, and would like Kelly Jordan to hold a book show, just let me know and I will tell her!

Quick Alum Day Update!

Hey ladies!

Just a quick tidbit; we officially have a date for ALUM DAY!

It will be on MARCH 26TH. This is a SATURDAY. It is the last Saturday of March. If any of you want to come in on Friday and spend the night, but don't want to get a room by yourself, give me your name and I will try to connect you to other alum that are willing to split the cost of a room. The same goes for anyone wishing to stay Saturday night. Or both nights. Just email me with your name, and the night(s) you want to stay.

I will post an itinerary and more details for Alum Day as soon as everything is finalized and approved.

--Blair the Alum Chair :)

P.S. If you have any questions, just email me at our new Alum Chair account: phimuasualumnae@gmail.com. I've synced the account with my phone, so I'll be sure to get them!

First Post Introductions!

Hey everyone! My name is Blair Casey and I am Lambda Beta's new Alumnae Chair! I'm really excited to get chapter news out to all of our alum. My goal this semester is to improve our chapter's alumnae relations by managing this blog and always being available to you.

First off, I want to tell you the purpose of this blog. I think that having a blog is a much better way for me to get news to you, and for you to be able to see the news. A newsletter attachment can get lost in the most organized inbox, so by having a blog, you can never lose it!

Secondly, I want to know what you want to know. I will of course be posting entries about the goings-on of Lambda Beta, but what else do you want to know? Maybe you want to know what happened to your pledge sister after graduation? Maybe you want to tell everyone how you're doing? I want this blog to be a way for all of our chapter's alum to have a chance to reconnect with the sisters they knew here at Appalachian.

I will hopefully have the website fully functional in the next couple of weeks. Until then, make sure to follow the blog, and invite all of your alum friends to do the same!

LIOB,
Blair the Alum Chair!
